Ronald Araujo has been repeatedly linked with a move to FC Bayern in recent years. Especially during Thomas Tuchel’s tenure, the Uruguayan centre-back was seen as a potential dream player for Munich’s defence. A new situation could now arise on the transfer market
As the Spanish portal El Nacional reports, FC Barcelona would now be prepared to sell Araujo on significantly reduced terms, with a transfer fee of around 30 million euros being enough to sign the 26-year-old next summer
During his time at FC Bayern, Thomas Tuchel had repeatedly emphasized within FCB that he wanted a new defensive boss, and Araujo was considered one of the candidates who could take on this role
According to consistent reports, talks even took place between the player and Bayern officials, but a transfer ultimately fell through due to FC Barcelona’s financial expectations
The Catalans demanded a transfer fee of between 80 and 100 million euros – a sum that the German record champions were not prepared to pay
Market value down significantly

The situation surrounding the central defender has since changed significantly. The Uruguayan’s market value has fallen noticeably in recent years. While Araujo was still valued at around €70 million in the summer of 2024, his current market value is only around €25 million according to Transfermarkt
Several factors have contributed to this development. On the one hand, the defender has repeatedly struggled with injuries. On the other, his performances have recently fluctuated more than in previous years
Araujo also made headlines off the pitch. At the end of last year, the central defender temporarily withdrew completely from the public eye and deactivated his social media channels
Barça coach Hansi Flick explained at the time that the player was not in a fit state to play due to a personal situation. With the club’s consent, Araujo subsequently took a break of several weeks
Spanish media reported unanimously that the defender was taking a mental break and finally returned to match action at the beginning of the year
Bayern currently well staffed
Despite the reduced transfer fee, a transfer to FC Bayern is currently considered rather unlikely. Munich are currently well-stocked in the center of defense
With Dayot Upamecano, Jonathan Tah and Minjae Kim, the record champions have several top-class options in central defense. An additional new signing would only be an issue if there were to be a change in personnel in this position
Bayern are also increasingly turning their attention to other players for potential reinforcements, with Malick Thiaw, Nico Schlotterbeck and Luka Vuskovic among those to have been linked with the record champions in recent months
It remains to be seen whether Ronald Araujo’s name will appear on Munich’s transfer list again, but there is currently little to suggest that FC Bayern will make another attempt in the summer.
