The contract poker between Borussia Dortmund and Nico Schlotterbeck continues to drag on, with a recent meeting between BVB officials and the player’s side apparently failing to produce a breakthrough
As reported by BILD, the Dortmund bosses recently met with Schlotterbeck’s father Marc and his advisor Björn Etzel for further talks, but once again no agreement on a contract extension could be reached
The central defender will therefore continue to wait and hope for an offer from a top international club for as long as possible, with Real Madrid repeatedly mentioned as a possible dream destination
Schlotterbeck is taking his time
While BVB are aiming to make a decision as quickly as possible, Schlotterbeck is apparently pursuing a different strategy. The 26-year-old wants to take his time with his future and carefully examine all options
According to the report, so-called soft factors are also playing a role in the talks with Dortmund, with Schlotterbeck wanting a more attractive style of play at BVB in order to increase his chances of winning titles, among other things. However, this point should not be the only decisive factor in his final decision
There is also a risky scenario for BVB: If Schlotterbeck does not extend his contract, Dortmund could enter the final year of his contract with him and even lose him on a free transfer in the summer of 2027 – instead of earning around €40 million after the current season

FC Bayern are also keeping a close eye on the international’s unresolved future, with two influential figures in Munich, Uli Hoeneß and Karl-Heinz Rummenigge, said to be big fans of the defender
According to reports, both have believed Schlotterbeck to be the right player for the record champions for years. Hoeneß is said to have tried to bring the former Freiburg player to Munich shortly before his move to Dortmund in 2022

Sporting director Lars Ricken recently tried to calm the situation publicly, telling the WAZ newspaper that talks were continuing constructively
„The nice thing is that very little is leaking out from either our side or his. That is a sign of trusting talks,“ said Ricken
Ricken also does not see the length of the negotiations as a problem: „The negotiations may seem long to the public, but for a player of this calibre who has to make a significant decision, that is nothing out of the ordinary. I can tell you: our offer is an absolute vote of confidence in Nico’s abilities.“
