Despite FC Bayern’s 2-1 defeat, Vincent Kompany remained calm in the post-match interview. Nevertheless, he is demanding an appropriate response from his team in the next game
One of Vincent Kompany’s first words on the Sky microphone after the 2-1 defeat against Augsburg was: „Show a reaction, now!“ Although his team had let a 1-0 lead slip in front of their home crowd and had not reached their performance limit over 90 minutes, Kompany remained calm
He explained the reasons for the defeat as follows: „Augsburg are playing well. It’s one of those phases where I think we play five games in 13 days. From experience: when something happens, it’s often in these phases. We tried, but I don’t think we had the energy in the second half. That gave Augsburg the chance to be dangerous.“
Nevertheless, Kompany made it clear: „We’ve had many, many victories here and have always been very happy. Now we’ve lost and have to accept it properly.“
Did Bayern lack the hunger?
Joshua Kimmich had complained after the game that his team had lacked a little hunger. Asked about this, Kompany said: „Maybe he said that, but the hunger is always there from our side. The performance is sometimes not there. And again, it’s always said that the Bundesliga is easy. We knew when we won that it wouldn’t be easy, and that’s why we have great respect for Augsburg. We can’t get too small now either. Respect for Augsburg. They deserved to win. It has to go on, we have to react. And now accept that it’s not our day today.“
So far this season, Munich have averaged almost four goals per game. When asked why only one was scored today, Kompany replied: „Because there are eleven players opposite us who do everything they can to prevent the ball from going in. We’ve often scored a lot of goals in this phase with so many players and have always been dangerous. Today I would say that you have to be a bit logical and see how much this first phase demands of the boys physically. So far they’ve done very, very well. Today we didn’t manage it.“
The Bayern coach concluded: „Now it’s about the reaction, not the reaction to the press, that’s not important. It’s about the reaction on the pitch, and that’s no guarantee either, but that’s always a moment when we know what we have to do.“
