Will Manuel Neuer extend his contract with FC Bayern? Chief Sports Officer Max Eberl gives an insight into the timetable for negotiations
Max Eberl spoke to Sport BILD about the future of Manuel Neuer – and revealed when FC Bayern are planning the next steps with their captain. A quick contract discussion is therefore not to be expected
„Manu will turn 40 in March, and we will discuss his future after that,“ explained the sporting director. It’s less about strategic perspectives and more about a personal feeling: „We don’t need to talk about perspectives with him, it’s about a feeling. And at the moment he feels totally comfortable and we have a great feeling about him.“ So, according to Eberl, we will wait for Neuer’s birthday on 27 March
Eberl joked with regard to a possible World Cup nomination for Neuer: „The question is also: What will he think when he has played the 2026 World Cup and become world champion?“
When asked whether Neuer had to go to the World Cup, he answered clearly: „Yes. He is Germany’s best goalkeeper! We are incredibly happy that we have extended his contract and that he is healthy. The vacations help him when there are international breaks. But: He is totally on fire.“
Eberl: Urbig can fill Neuer’s shoes
Looking ahead to the time after Neuer is also exciting. Eberl expressed his confidence in Jonas Urbig: „With Jonas, we have someone with whom we are prepared for the day – whenever it should be there. We are sure that he is a candidate who can fill Manuel’s shoes.“
The message seems clear: Neuer will remain number one for as long as he is capable and motivated – and Urbig will be ready when his moment comes.
