Manuel Neuer is in the late autumn of his career. The Bayern captain’s contract only runs until the summer of 2025 and it is still unclear what will happen after that. Alexander Nübel has a chance of succeeding Neuer. However, the goalkeeper, who is currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart, does not appear to be the only candidate on the Isar.
FC Bayern’s goalkeeper situation promises to be interesting in the coming year. After all, Manuel Neuer’s contract expires in 2025 and it is still unclear whether there will be another extension.
Alexander Nübel, who was awarded a European Championship ticket on Thursday for his strong season at VfB Stuttgart, has put himself in the running as a possible successor. To really be considered as Bayern’s future number one, he will have to at least confirm his performance in the coming season.
Maignan or Nübel: Who will be Neuer’s successor?
According to the Italian portal Calciomercato, another candidate to succeed Neuer is Milan keeper Mike Maignan. The Frenchman is said to have aroused Munich’s interest some time ago and is still a candidate at the Isar. However, the 28-year-old would not be easy to acquire. According to the report, the transfer fee for Maignan would be around 70 million euros and the Rossoneri are actually keen to keep their number one.
„Theo Hernandez, Rafa Leao and Mike Maignan are happy to stay at AC Milan. They all have long-term contracts here,“ emphasised Milan boss Giorgio Furlani recently. However, Maignan’s contract only runs until 2026, which is why Milan would have to seek an extension to avoid losing him on a free transfer.
Due to Bayern’s interest, this is also said to be the Rossoneri’s current priority. However, the Serie A club would have to significantly increase the keeper’s salary to do so. Maignan and his advisors are reportedly demanding €4.5 million per year net plus bonuses. The Frenchman currently earns „only“ 2.8 million. If Milan can finalise an extension, Bayern’s chances are no longer good.
In any case, the question arises as to whether it makes sense to invest so much money in Maignan, when Nübel could take over the position in the Bayern jersey after his contract extension at no additional cost.
