FC Bayern is still looking for a coach for the coming season. Following the cancellation of Xabi Alonso, Roberto De Zerbi is considered the most promising candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel. Bayern legend Lothar Matthäus also believes Christian Streich has a chance of winning the coaching job in Munich.
For weeks, Leverkusen coach Xabi Alonso was seen as Bayern’s favourite coach. However, the Spaniard recently announced that he will remain with the Werkself for at least another season.
The guesswork surrounding the German record champions‘ search for a coach is therefore continuing. According to the latest reports, Brighton coach Roberto De Zerbi has now moved into the focus of Bayern bosses. However, names such as Julian Nagelsmann, Ralf Rangnick and Erik Ten Haag are also being discussed at the Munich office.
Matthäus: Streich would be a „likeable solution“
In an interview with BILD, TV pundit Lothar Matthäus gave another candidate an outside chance: Christian Streich. The 58-year-old will leave SC Freiburg at the end of the current season. It is not yet clear whether and how his career will continue after that.
Matthäus is also not sure „whether he is ready to throw himself back into the fray. He was coach at Freiburg for 13 years, that doesn’t leave you untouched. I think he will take a holiday first.“ However, the record-breaking German international said: „It would definitely be a nice solution. If he still has the fire, why not. I see an outside chance with him.“
The Freiburg veteran himself has no concrete plans for his sporting future to date: „I have no idea, I don’t know. I don’t know what will happen to me in June,“ Streich said recently. But he would be „very surprised if I were to turn up somewhere in July.“
Hoeneß once wanted to bring Streich to Munich
In the past, Streich has repeatedly been linked with a move to FC Bayern. „He’s one of my favourite coaches,“ said Honorary President Uli Hoeneß in a Sky interview in 2022.
There had even been talk of signing Streich: „We once thought about bringing him to Munich. I was also one of the people in charge, because I would have liked to give it a try. But in the end, we didn’t have the courage.“
