Thomas Müller still shows in some games that he can be a real asset for FC Bayern. Despite everything, the attacking veteran is nearing the end of his career. Thomas Helmer cannot imagine that the 34-year-old will be able to provide long-term support.
Bayern veteran Thomas Müller has been able to capitalise on the injuries to Serge Gnabry and Kingsley Coman and make the leap back into the regular squad. Müller shone in the Champions League second leg against Lazio Rome, among others, with a goal and a very strong performance beyond that.
Helmer no longer sees Müller as a regular
Ex-Bayern professional Thomas Helmer nevertheless doubts that the attacking free spirit will be a permanent fixture in the first eleven in the future. „A Thomas Müller won’t play five top games in a row, he knows that himself,“ said the 1996 European champion in an interview with Focus, casting doubt on the perennial favourite.
Helmer feels it is right that FC Bayern are putting some long-established players to the test: „I do believe that we need to talk internally about one or two players,“ he explained.
Unlike Serge Gnabry, Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka, for example, Thomas Müller’s departure in the summer is not yet up for discussion. The „Raumdeuter“ only extended his contract in Munich until 2025 in the course of the season. This means he will play a more or less important role at least until the end of the coming season.
