Martin Demichelis was also recently mooted as a possible coaching candidate at FC Bayern. The Argentinian has now commented on this.
Martin Demichelis played as a centre-back at FC Bayern from 2003 to 2011. He won four German championships with FCB, the DFB Cup four times and reached the Champions League final in 2010.
Demichelis has had a stellar career as a coach and is currently head coach at top Argentinian club River Plate in Buenos Aires. Most recently, he was rumoured to be a possible Bayern coach by the Spanish newspaper Sport.
He has now been asked about this at a press conference. Demichelis said: „Everyone knows how much I feel connected to Bayern Munich – I played there for eight years, worked as a coach and club ambassador. But now I’m at River – and I love being here. I think we’re going to have a great year in 2024.“
Demichelis: „I’m very happy at River“
Demichelis continued on the Bayern rumours: „I was never in a rush. I’m very happy at River. I’ve tried to prepare myself as well as possible for this opportunity. I’m very focussed on everything here.“
After his playing career, Demichelis returned to the German record champions as a coach in 2019. He first stood on the touchline with the U19s before coaching Bayern’s second team in the regional league. In January 2023, Demichelis became coach at River Plate and immediately led his former club to the championship in Argentina.
On his departure from Munich, Demichelis said at the time: „I leave this club with a lot of gratitude in my heart and am now looking forward to the big task at my second favourite club. River is the Bayern Munich of South America. They have very similar principles, values and methods.“
