Bayern will find out who they will face in next year’s Champions League round of 16 this Monday (12:00 CET). Thomas Tuchel has commented on the Champions League draw and a possible preferred opponent and recognized one fact as a very special advantage.
With Lazio Roma, Inter Milan, SSC Napoli, PSV Eindhoven, Paris Saint-Germain and FC Porto as possible opponents in the Champions League round of 16, Munich have already avoided giants such as Manchester City and Real Madrid by winning their group. Nevertheless, the aforementioned teams should not be underestimated either; with Inter Milan, for example, the German record champions could face an enormously in-form team from Italy.
So has FCB coach Thomas Tuchel identified a team that he would particularly like to draw? „No, no, we’re not wishing for anything. The motto is: you get what you get and don’t get upset. We’ve worked hard to win the group, so we have the advantage of playing the second leg at home,“ said the 50-year-old.
„Take it step by step“
After Bayern’s home win over VfB Stuttgart, Tuchel also spoke about his team’s chances of winning the title in the top flight and explained: „The only way to think about the title is not to think about it and just take it one step at a time. There’s no point in making big speeches and talking about things that happen in May while we’re still in December.“
In this context, however, he also turned his attention to the German record champions‘ last remaining match in the 2023 calendar year: „No matter who we face tomorrow, our focus is on our performance against Wolfsburg on Wednesday.“ The final game of the year awaits Munich there at 8.30 p.m.
