In recent days, a debate has arisen surrounding Bayern youngster Lennart Karl. The rising star from last season is currently having some trouble bringing his top form to the field.
It all started with a statement by Uli Hoeneß in a recent interview. “I plan to have a serious talk with him. He’s far from being a superstar. Young players need humility. Comparisons to Olise are clearly not doing him any good; there’s still a world of difference between them,” explained the Bayern boss.
Subsequently, Max Eberl also stated that they’d have to lower their expectations a bit for now, but that this is perfectly normal for a young player. Later, Michael Ballack weighed in on the discussion. The former pro is Karl’s advisor and didn’t find the statements from Bayern’s officials entirely appropriate.
Karl Debate: Effenberg Weighs In on Ballack
“The fact that Max Eberl, now that Lennart’s performance curve is clearly on the rise again, is attributing a slump in his performance—complete with missteps—is incomprehensible given the timing and, at the very least, questionable in terms of substance,” Ballack recently told DAZN. Stefan Effenberg did not like these statements at all. The former national team player, who played for Bayern himself, has now criticized Ballack on the “Doppelpass” show on Sport1.

“It wasn’t smart of Michael Ballack to reopen this can of worms now, so that we’re talking about it here,” Effenberg clarified. “That wasn’t good. He shouldn’t have commented on it in his role as an expert when he’s also a consultant—that’s always a difficult situation.” According to Effenberg, Ballack should have addressed the issue internally instead.
Effenberg also didn’t want to read too much into Hoeneß’s comments. “It’s normal for Uli Hoeneß to say something like that—we’ve seen this from him over the past few decades,” the former pro said. Karl himself now wants to prove himself on the field above all else. Recently, it’s been clear that he’s playing with great determination and trying to overcome his inconsistent form. He needs to continue on this path.
