On Friday afternoon, reports began circulating that Bayern coach Vincent Kompany had been taken to the hospital by ambulance. The record-holding champions subsequently confirmed this.
The Belgian had recently been struggling with a persistent viral infection and had already been forced to scale back his activities. There was great concern. At least it was reported fairly quickly that the coach was in stable condition but would need to undergo further tests.
That same evening, it emerged that this wasn’t the first time the coach had been hospitalized that week. He had already undergone a checkup earlier, though nothing was found.
Eberl Provides an Update on Kompany
Today, Saturday, Max Eberl provided an update on the coach’s current health status at the press conference ahead of the match against SC Freiburg, which takes place on Sunday at 5:30 p.m.

“First, the good news: He’s stable; we spoke last night. It wasn’t a pleasant moment for any of us. He’s in the hospital and will remain there for a few more days until they’ve checked and examined everything. This shows once again that soccer isn’t the most important thing,” said Kompany.
He continued: “The important thing now is to find the cause. And that he doesn’t return until he’s fully fit again. That’s our priority right now. He’d already been having some minor issues last week. The doctors are working to figure out what it is. We’ve already received some results, but further tests are needed before we have clarity and know how to treat it. He’s in the best hands. And what we can do is support him emotionally.”
The workload has been heavy in recent weeks; Kompany was under a lot of stress and, according to some reports, had been getting very little sleep. He often spent late evenings or even into the night analyzing opponents. This workload, combined with the infection, was ultimately too much for him.
