FC Bayern put on a real goal-scoring spree against Union Berlin. In their 7-0 victory at the Allianz Arena, the record champions impressed with their high intensity and enthusiasm. Vincent Kompany was understandably pleased after the game—and saw the lopsided win as a gift for the fans.
“We actually always want to show this kind of energy. We managed to do that today, and we’re naturally very happy with this wonderful victory,” Kompany told Sky after the final whistle. Looking ahead to Oktoberfest, the Bayern coach added: “Now the fans are off to the Wiesn—and that’s a great gift for them.”
Michael Olise, in particular, stood out in the rout. The Frenchman scored a hat trick, set up a goal for Harry Kane, and drew the penalty that Kane converted to make it 2–0. Kompany emphasized, however, that Olise’s stellar performance wasn’t driven by talent alone.
“You saw how much the guys sprint and chase down every ball. Sure, Michael scores these goals, but he’s also worked very hard on his finishing in training. Even top players need more than just talent,” explained the Bayern coach.
Praise for Musiala and Kane
Jamal Musiala also received special praise after his first 90-minute appearance since his long break. “Jamal played 90 minutes and scored another goal. That might not seem like much because we scored seven goals, but what he did was really impressive,” said Kompany.
Meanwhile, Harry Kane set a new Bundesliga record. With his two-goal performance, the Englishman scored his 100th and 101st goals for Bayern in the Bundesliga —and did so in just 98 games.
Kompany didn’t want to commit to whether this record would stand the test of time. For him, Kane’s overall performance is much more important: “People talk about his goals and everything he’s done, but he also works incredibly hard for the team. And then there are those goals on top of that. What he does is truly special.”
After this spectacular performance, FC Bayern is now heading into the international break. Kompany himself plans to use the free time to go to Oktoberfest with family and friends. “I have a wonderful life, but I also work a lot. A little bit of normalcy is important every now and then,” the Belgian explained.
