Max Eberl’s contract extension with FC Bayern continues to be a topic of discussion. Most recently, President Herbert Hainer dismissed the impression that there had been a lengthy back-and-forth among the club’s leadership prior to the decision. However, new information now paints a more nuanced picture.
According to SPORT1, Eberl’s new contract, which runs through 2029, was not unanimously approved by the supervisory board. Karl-Heinz Rummenigge is said to have abstained from the vote.
This also lends new significance to Uli Hoeneß’s most recent statement. On Monday, the honorary president admitted publicly for the first time that his premature prediction regarding Eberl’s contract extension had caused internal friction.
“My interview at Tegernsee, with my ‘100 percent’ comment, caused me enough trouble—internally,” Hoeneß explained. According to SPORT1 reports, Rummenigge, of all people, is said to have leveled particularly sharp criticism at Hoeneß for publicly preempting the supervisory board’s subsequent decision.
Rummenigge Sends a Mixed Message
According to SPORT1, the former Bayern CEO’s abstention is being interpreted as a mixed message. Reportedly, Rummenigge continues to view Eberl’s work with a critical eye and is not fully convinced by his performance.
At the same time, his decision is also said to have sent a signal within Bayern’s leadership. According to the report, Rummenigge does not want to automatically endorse every decision prepared by Hoeneß and Hainer.
Hoeneß himself recently explained why his assessment of Eberl’s work has improved over the past few months. The sporting director has become more open internally and has since kept the key decision-makers better informed.
“Before that, he had been a bit of a loner, and we didn’t like that. But he’s fundamentally changed that!” Hoeneß explained.
The honorary president has also come to express satisfaction with Eberl’s work in the transfer market. The contract extension through 2029 was ultimately the result—though apparently without Rummenigge’s full support.
Criticism of the supervisory board’s growing influence
According to SPORT1, the appointment of Eberl also masks a more fundamental discussion within Germany’s record-holding champion. Reportedly, there is criticism within the club that the supervisory board is exerting increasing influence over operational decisions.
Influential voices within the club are said to want a strong executive board that can make decisions independently and isn’t constantly steered by directives from the supervisory board.
As a result, the discussion has now moved beyond the mere extension of Eberl’s contract. On one side are Hoeneß, Hainer, and the supervisory board, who insist on having a say in important sporting and financial matters. Nevertheless, there is apparently a desire for greater operational autonomy for the executive board.
While Eberl’s future has been settled with his new contract through 2029, the discussion about how power and responsibility should be distributed within FC Bayern seems far from over.
