Mathys Tel wanted to leave FC Bayern to take the next step in his career in the Premier League. So far, that plan hasn’t really worked out. Even after his permanent transfer to Tottenham Hotspur, the former Bayern player is still waiting for his breakthrough with the Spurs.
Although Tel had shown glimpses of his potential here and there last season, he was unable to establish himself as a consistent key player. Above all, his goal-scoring output fell short of expectations.
Under Roberto De Zerbi, things were supposed to improve this season. The Italian is known for his attacking style of soccer and was expected to help Tel realize his potential more consistently. After four league games, however, the results are sobering: Tel is still waiting for his first goal.
And it’s not just the Frenchman who’s struggling. Tottenham’s entire offense has had major problems so far. After four matches, the Spurs haven’t scored a single league goal.
De Zerbi is having intensive talks with Tel
Just how tense the situation has become was evident after the 0-0 draw against Everton FC. Tel played for just over half an hour but was barely able to make an impact on the game.
The former Bayern Munich pro recorded just 17 touches. Tel also took one shot, which was blocked by the Everton defense.
After the final whistle, a conspicuous exchange took place on the field between de Zerbi and Tel. The Tottenham coach spoke intensely to his player, gesturing energetically throughout. Tel listened to his coach but occasionally reacted with raised eyebrows.
It is not known exactly what de Zerbi said to his attacking players. However, the scene made it clear that the coach apparently feels there is a need for a discussion.
For Tel, the situation comes at an inopportune time. Just a few weeks ago, a completely botched free kick by the Frenchman went viral on social media. Subsequently, the 21-year-old faced significant criticism in England.
Is another transfer already on the horizon?
Tel is currently not an undisputed starter at Tottenham. Although he gets regular playing time, he has not yet been able to consistently earn a spot in the starting lineup.
This is also increasing the pressure on the former Bayern youth player. In England, voices are already growing louder that are taking a critical view of his development at Tottenham.
If Tel fails to significantly improve his performance in the coming months, his future with the Spurs could once again become a topic of discussion. A possible winter departure is at least a scenario on the table should his on-field situation not improve.
However, it’s still too early to tell. The season has only just begun, and De Zerbi is likely to continue trying to develop Tel. Furthermore, Tottenham’s entire offense is struggling, so the current goal drought cannot be attributed solely to the Frenchman.
Nevertheless, it’s crucial for Tel to respond as quickly as possible. His move from Bayern Munich to England was supposed to mark his definitive breakthrough. At the moment, the 21-year-old is further from that breakthrough than he had hoped.
