For FC Bayern, the new Champions League season kicks off on Thursday evening (starting at 9 p.m. in the LIVETICKER on FCBinside and in the FCBinside app)—and the German record champions could reach a historic milestone as early as their opener against FK Bodø/Glimt. The Munich team needs just one more goal to break an impressive record.
Vincent Kompany’s team has scored 899 goals so far in the Champions League and the European Cup. If they score against Bodø/Glimt, it would mark Bayern’s 900th goal in Europe’s premier club competition.
This would make the Munich club only the second in history to reach this milestone. Real Madrid remains at the top. Los Blancos have scored 1,139 goals and thus set the standard in this statistic as well.
For Bayern, however, the 900th goal would be further proof of their decades-long success story on Europe’s biggest soccer stage.
Bayern Chases the Magical 900
The odds are good that this historic milestone will be reached as early as Thursday. That’s because Bayern boasts an exceptional record in their Champions League opening matches.
Since 2003, the record champions have won their first match in the Champions League in all 22 of their appearances. Kompany’s team also enters the match against Bodø/Glimt as the clear favorite.
After the disappointing 0-0 draw at FC Schalke 04, the Munich side also has something to make up for. For the first time in 59 consecutive competitive matches, Bayern failed to score in Gelsenkirchen. Ironically, the perfect response could come right at the start of the Champions League—along with an entry in the history books.
Of course, it’s anyone’s guess who will score the milestone goal. But one candidate is likely especially eager to do so: Harry Kane.
Kane has the chance to break several records at once
After an outstanding season last year, the 33-year-old is once again entering the Champions League with high ambitions. In the Champions League, Kane scored 14 goals in 13 matches. Only Kylian Mbappé was more successful, with 15 goals.
This season, the Bayern striker is making another run at the top scorer title. At the same time, Kane could overtake other prominent names on the all-time Champions League scoring list as early as the group stage.
With 54 goals to his credit, the Englishman currently ranks tenth. Ruud van Nistelrooy, with 56 goals, and Bayern icon Thomas Müller, with 57 goals, are already within striking distance.
Should Kane score against Bodø/Glimt, his goal could even take on special significance. The forward has the chance to become the player who scores Bayern’s 900th European Cup goal.
But regardless of who ultimately scores that historic goal, the new Champions League season could kick off with a special milestone for FC Bayern.
