Leon Goretzka’s contract with FC Bayern expired this summer. The midfielder has been looking for a new club ever since, but until recently, no ideal solution had presented itself. That has now changed.
As early as this past winter, shortly before it became clear that the midfielder would not be getting a new contract, there were rumors of a possible move to Milan or Atlético; Arsenal was also reportedly interested.
However, the situation had changed by summer. Arsenal set its sights on other players, and Milan had missed out on the Champions League and had to completely rethink its plans. Now, though, something seems to have come up, as Goretzka is on the verge of making a decision.
Goretzka is leaning toward Aston Villa
What had been hinted at recently is now finally about to happen. The former Bayern player is expected to sign with Aston Villa shortly. Transfer expert Matteo Moretto reports exclusively that a full agreement has been reached. According to the report, Goretzka will sign with the Birmingham club, and the paperwork is already in progress.
A conversation with coach Unai Emery was apparently the deciding factor in the impending signing. He wants to strengthen his midfield, especially since Amadou Onana will be out for an extended period. The Belgian is recovering from a torn cruciate ligament.
Aston Villa’s thinking is that Goretzka brings experience, and his dynamism and physicality are a good fit for the Premier League. Details regarding salary and contract length are not yet available, but they should be announced soon.
There were recent rumors of a move to MLS, but Goretzka has always preferred to stay in Europe. That wish has now been granted. Since Goretzka is currently a free agent and therefore no negotiations with a club are necessary, the deal could be finalized and officially announced quickly.
