During his official presentation as a new signing for FC Bayern, Nathaniel Brown offered an exciting glimpse into his future role. The national team player doesn’t see himself exclusively on the left side of defense—rather, he believes he’s capable of playing in the center as well. It is precisely this versatility that makes him particularly valuable to Vincent Kompany.
With Nathaniel Brown, FC Bayern has signed one of the most sought-after German defenders. The 23-year-old completed his second training session on Wednesday at the team’s training camp on Lake Tegernsee before officially presenting himself to the media for the first time.
“I’m really excited to finally be here,” Brown said at the start of his introduction. He’s finding it easy to settle in: “I already know a lot of them, anyway. I’m still getting to know the others.”
For the native of the Upper Palatinate, the move to the record champions is something very special. “It’s special for me because I’m from Bavaria. Everyone in Amberg is a Bayern fan, too—it’s crazy that I’m already here,” said the new signing.
“I’ve played a lot in the center”
On the field, Brown made it clear that he doesn’t want to be pigeonholed into a single position.
Although the national team player was primarily signed to bolster the left side of the defense—where he’s expected to intensify the competition with Alphonso Davies—the 23-year-old sees himself as much more versatile. “I also played a lot in the center last season, and I feel very comfortable there. But of course I can play on the wing as well—I can do both,” Brown explained.
This opens up additional tactical options for defensive coach Vincent Kompany. Brown can be deployed both as a traditional left back and in a more central role—a profile that is increasingly in demand at FC Bayern.
Bayern is banking on Brown’s versatility
The fact that Brown is also an option in the center seems to have been factored into the club’s plans for quite some time.
Sporting director Max Eberl made it clear during the press conference that the Munich club has largely finalized its squad planning for the summer transfer window. No further signings are planned for August.
One reason for this is likely Brown’s flexibility. The 23-year-old can play multiple positions, thereby expanding the squad’s tactical options. Following the departures of Leon Goretzka, Raphael Guerreiro, and Noel Aseko, Bayern apparently sees no pressing need to add another player in central midfield.
Brown himself has clear goals for his first season with the record champions. “I want to show what I can do. I want to play in as many games as possible, help the team, and ultimately win titles,” the new signing emphasized.
Thanks to his versatility, he could become an important option for Vincent Kompany sooner than many initially expected. Whether on the left side or in the center—Brown seems ready to step in wherever the Bayern coach needs him most.
