FC Bayern recently officially confirmed the contract extension for Konrad Laimer. With this, the record champions have checked off the next important item on their to-do list. But it’s more than just a simple signature on a new contract.
The Laimer saga, with its positive outcome, sets an example and sends a clear signal—on multiple levels.
The Austrian, who is versatile but has established himself as a right back, is now tied to the record champions through 2029. And he’s personally extremely happy about it, as he feels particularly at home in Munich, close to his native country.
Laimer’s Contract Extension: A Compromise for All Parties
Signs that an agreement had been reached had already been emerging over the past few days and weeks. The final deal is said to have been struck shortly before the World Cup. Yet things didn’t look that way around the turn of the year. There was talk of stalled negotiations and high demands.
Uli Hoeneß, Bayern’s honorary president, also weighed in over the past few months, stating that Laimer was no Maradona and therefore could not be paid like one. There was talk of demands—some quite high—for an annual salary of more than 15 million euros.
This was a particularly high demand mainly because Laimer had previously been earning in the single-digit millions. In the end, however, a compromise was reached because no one lost their cool during the negotiations.
Bayern clearly articulated its position: namely, that while the club recognizes the player’s contributions, it must also keep the overall salary budget in mind. After all, contract extensions for players like Michael Olise and Harry Kane are still on the horizon—at least in an ideal scenario.
Laimer, who is now set to earn up to twelve million euros annually, and his agents understood this. His demands had already been significantly adjusted some time ago, and Bayern’s management also took a step toward Laimer’s position.
In the end, a compromise was reached that satisfied both sides. Bayern is paying a market-rate salary for an experienced top player, and Laimer is receiving the trust and financial compensation that reflect his development.
The symbolic significance on two levels
From Bayern’s perspective, it’s important that this contract extension went through in this form and without too much fanfare. If the two sides hadn’t found some common ground and had remained stubborn, the risk of losing a top player would have been very real. Had they completely caved in, it would have created further problems for future negotiations.
So it really couldn’t have gone much better. Laimer’s contract extension also means a lot to the record champions from a sporting perspective. The Austrian is a reliable right back; he can also fill in to some extent in the now-thinned-out central midfield—his natural position—and is generally regarded as someone who rarely suffers from injuries or ailments.
Incidentally, Max Eberl, the sporting director whose future remains uncertain, is also sending a signal with this deal. He’s doing his job, closing numerous deals early on, and thereby providing FC Bayern with planning certainty. If he now sells a few more players, things are looking very good for him indeed.
