The 2026 World Cup is still in its early stages, but potential blockbuster matchups for the knockout rounds are already taking shape. From FC Bayern’s perspective, a potential Round of 16 match between Germany and France would be particularly exciting. Dayot Upamecano certainly wouldn’t have any objections to facing his Munich teammates—quite the opposite.
With numerous national team players, FC Bayern once again represents one of the largest contingents of players at the World Cup. The likelihood of Bayern pros facing off against each other during the tournament is correspondingly high.
While Harry Kane could face Josip Stanisic and Croatia with England as early as the group stage, a true clash of titans between Germany and France looms in the Round of 16.
For Dayot Upamecano, that would apparently be his dream matchup.
Upamecano is hoping for Germany in the Round of 16
In an interview with BILD , the French international made it clear that he has no fear of facing the German national team. “I’m aware of the situation, of course! Germany has a great team. I know the players, and I know the coach too. That round of 16 matchup would be my dream—why not?” explained the center back.
The statement is quite surprising, after all, France would face numerous players with whom Upamecano works daily at FC Bayern.
Above all, Joshua Kimmich, Jamal Musiala, Jonathan Tah, and Aleksandar Pavlovic are among the key players on the German team.
A potential round of 16 matchup would be particularly appealing for the Bayern pros.
On the German side, Kimmich, Musiala, Tah, Pavlovic, and Manuel Neuer form the backbone of Julian Nagelsmann’s team. France, in turn, relies on Upamecano and Michael Olise as key players.
Such a matchup would inevitably lead to numerous direct club showdowns.
Praise for the Bayern contingent in the DFB squad

Upamecano also took the opportunity to highlight the importance of the Munich players for the German national team.
When asked whether Germany benefits from its large Bayern core, the Frenchman answered unequivocally. “Yes, that’s completely normal. We’re champions of Germany with Bayern. We have a lot of good players; we have a lot of experience. The German team benefits from this Bayern contingent, with players like Kimmich or Jonathan Tah.”
The well-rehearsed plays between the Bayern pros in particular could be a major advantage for Germany as the tournament progresses.
The center back himself is heading into the World Cup with a great deal of confidence.
After a strong season with FC Bayern, Upamecano is now one of the undisputed leaders in the French defense. His importance to the Équipe Tricolore has grown steadily in recent years.
This is another reason why many experts consider France one of the top favorites to win the World Cup title.
A reunion after twelve years?
Should a Round of 16 clash between Germany and France actually take place, a special chapter in World Cup history would continue.
The last time the two nations faced off at a World Cup was in 2014 in Brazil. Back then, the German national team prevailed 1-0 in the quarterfinals, laying the groundwork for their eventual title win.
Twelve years later, a rematch could now be on the cards—with numerous Bayern stars on both sides.
And at least Dayot Upamecano already seems to be looking forward to this scenario with great anticipation.
