FC Bayern is set for a major squad shake-up in the summer – the Munich club is facing massive losses. Several candidates for sale could turn out to be a financial problem
The direction at Säbener Straße is clear: the squad is to be slimmed down, and sporting director Max Eberl has already announced that sales are necessary to compensate for the costly contract extensions of the stars
However, this is precisely where the problem lies: numerous players without sporting prospects are returning in the summer – and hardly bring in the value that Bayern once invested
Palhinha threatens to become a 30-million loss
The biggest problem case is João Palhinha. The Portuguese was signed in 2024 for around €50 million, but was never able to establish himself. His current market value is only around €18 million
Tottenham have an option to buy him for around €30 million, but are unlikely to exercise it. Even if they do sell him, FC Bayern could lose up to €30 million – and that within just two years
The situation also looks sobering for Sacha Boey. The right-back came to Munich in 2024 for around €30 million, but his market value is now only around €15 million. So even in the best-case scenario, FCB would make a loss of around €15 million
The situation with Bryan Zaragoza is a little less dramatic, but still problematic. The Spaniard also arrived in 2024 and could currently be sold for around €13 to 15 million – with a market value of around €10 million. A large profit is not to be expected here, especially as a buyer must first be found
Salaries exacerbate the situation
In addition to the transfer fees, salaries are a particular burden for Bayern. Palhinha is expected to earn around €10 million per year, while Boey and Zaragoza together earn around €7 million per year
If the players do not find a new club, FC Bayern would have to continue paying these sums – despite Vincent Kompany’s lack of a sporting role in the squad
Even in the case of Alexander Nübel, a possible transfer fee is put into perspective. Although the keeper could bring in around €10 to 15 million , with a rumoured salary of up to €12 million per year, the income would be almost completely used up. A sale would therefore primarily cover the costs incurred to date – there would hardly be any real profit left over
Loss of up to 40 million euros
If only these problem cases are added together, FC Bayern faces a total loss of around 40 million euros in the summer – a sum that shows just how difficult the planned squad shake-up could be
For Max Eberl and Christoph Freund, the summer transfer window will be a tightrope walk: they not only have to make the right sporting decisions, but also limit the economic damage
The change is necessary – but it could cost FC Bayern dearly.
