FC Bayern beat Real Madrid 4-3 to reach the semi-finals of the Champions League – but it’s not just the game itself that is causing a stir. While the Munich fans are celebrating the emotional triumph, the anger of many supporters is surprisingly directed at DAZN pundit Sami Khedira
The 2014 World Cup winner was on duty as co-commentator during the broadcast and his statements drew the ire of numerous Bayern fans. The criticism on social media was sometimes fierce – in the middle of one of the biggest European Cup nights in the club’s recent history
Many fans felt that Khedira did not appear neutral enough during the match and the former Real professional, who played for Madrid between 2011 and 2015, was accused of sympathizing too much with the Whites
The scene involving the sending off of Eduardo Camavinga was particularly in the spotlight, with the Frenchman receiving a yellow card after a tactical infringement and knocking the ball away – a decision that Khedira commented on critically
For many Bayern supporters, however, this criticism went too far. There were strong words on social media. „Khedira was a complete disaster today,“ wrote one user, while another simply described his decision as a „miscast“ and a „biased perception“
Perception as biased
It’s worth noting how disgustingly „neutral“ this commentary team from @DAZN_DE is. In every other country, the commentator sticks by the local team, in Germany it just doesn’t work.
Khedira
is probably already sitting there in his old Real jersey anyway.

One of the fans‘ main criticisms was that Khedira barely addressed important scenes that went against Real, such as Antonio Rüdiger’s possible foul on Josip Stanisic before Madrid made it 3-2 or the discussion about the free-kick before the 2-1
Instead, many viewers got the impression that the coverage was one-sided: „Rüdiger knocks Stanisic away and Khedira only talks about the referee deciding the game in Bayern’s favour,“ criticized one user
The emotionality of the match was not only transferred to the pitch, but also to the perception of the TV analysis. Especially in a match of this magnitude, fans react particularly sensitively to supposedly unequal treatment
However, it is hardly surprising that a match like this generates heated debate. The quarter-final second leg between Bayern and Real had everything that makes soccer special: goals, twists and turns, emotion – and controversial decisions
In the end, from a sporting point of view, it remains to be said that FC Bayern prevailed in an epic duel and deservedly progressed to the semi-finals of the Champions League.
