FC Bayern are planning a major squad shake-up in the summer in order to be able to attack in the German championship again next season. Nevertheless, Lothar Matthäus still sees Bayer Leverkusen as favourites for the title.

After Bayer Leverkusen were crowned German champions in impressive style this season, Lothar Matthäus believes the club is „many steps ahead of FC Bayern.“ The record champions must first catch up. If Bayer keep the squad together as far as possible, he believes they will be favourites to win the title next season too, because „Xabi Alonso has united everyone – that’s the key to success,“ Matthäus told the Münchner Abendzeitung newspaper.

For FC Bayern, the key to success will probably lie in successfully managing the reorganisation in the summer. According to BILD, Bayern are prepared to spend up to 200 million euros on new players in the summer. At the same time, however, he emphasised that such an amount must also be „financed by possible sales“.

Is Ralf Rangnick the right man for the reorganisation?

RalfRangnick, who still appears to be the top candidate to succeed Thomas Tuchel, believes Matthäus is the right man to share responsibility for the squad reorganisation: „With his intelligence and experience, he can also manage FC Bayern. He is certainly not easy – but where he has been, he has been successful.“

However, negotiations with the 65-year-old are currently at a standstill. Rangnick is said to be demanding a comprehensive say in squad planning. Furthermore, the ÖFB does not want to let its national coach go without a fight. According to reports, a transfer fee in the region of 10 million euros is being demanded.

Should the signing of the Austrian national coach not work out after all, the Bayern legend sees Roger Schmidt and Zinedine Zidane as the best options for the coaching job at FC Bayern.
