FC Bayern Munich are focussing their search for reinforcements for their central midfield. One Spaniard in particular, who shares a past with Leverkusen coach Alonso, appears to have moved into the Munich club’s focus.

According to Sport BILD, FC Bayern have shelved their interest in João Palhinha for the time being and are now fully focussing on Martín Zubimendi as their main target for the position of defensive midfielder.

Zubimendi, who played under Alonso at Real Sociedad B, could be incentivised to move to the German record champions by Alonso’s appointment as coach. The Spanish midfielder is said to have a release clause of 60 million euros. In addition, Zubimendi and Alonso have the same advisor, which could simplify negotiations between the parties.

Bayern are not alone in their interest in Zubimendi, however. Arsenal and their coach Mikel Arteta are also keeping an eye on the player. Juventus, AC Milan, Manchester United and Liverpool FC are also rumoured to be interested in the defensive midfielder.

Is Zubimendi the holding six they are looking for?

Squad planning and the search for a successor to Thomas Tuchel continue to keep the Bayern bosses on their toes. In addition to extending the contract of the super-talented Mathys Tel until 2029, FC Bayern wants to reintegrate solid pillars into the team. The position of the so-called holding six has been under discussion for some time.

This area has already been identified as a weak point in the past, especially after the once dominant axis of Joshua Kimmich and Leon Goretzka came under criticism. In addition to his defensive qualities, Zubimendi is also regarded as a good playmaker from deep. A profile that could fit in well with Munich’s demands.

Zubimendi, who is a regular at Real Sociedad and has made an impressive 41 competitive appearances this season, is attracting attention with his consistently strong performances. The 25-year-old has made four appearances for Spain’s senior national team. His desire to play regularly in the Champions League and his past with Alonso could play into Bayern’s hands.
