FC Bayern is facing elimination from the Champions League. The Munich team conceded a clear 0:3 defeat to the English champions in the quarter-final first leg against Manchester City.

After eight wins in a row, FC Bayern has conceded its first defeat in the current Champions League season. Thomas Tuchel and his team were beaten 3-0 by Manchester City on Tuesday evening and did not set themselves up well for next week’s second leg at home in the Allianz Arena.

Tuchel does without Müller and Cancelo

While Bayern had to do without Choupo-Moting (knee problems) in Manchester, Thomas Tuchel also made three changes to his starting eleven: Goretzka Davies and Coman moved into the first eleven. Joao Cancelo, Thomas Müller and Sadio Mané had to make room for them.

Rodri’s dream goal puts City in front

In the early stages of the game, it was an open exchange of punches. Bayern attacked City early on, but the home side were not really impressed.

The game became dangerous for the first time in the 14th minute when Sommer almost lost the ball to Haaland after an Upamecano backpass. However, the Swiss managed to clear the dicey situation at the very last second.

Bayern appeared in front of the Skyblues‘ goal for the first time in the 26th. After a nice solo run by Sane, Jamal Musiala had a free shot from 12 metres, but his attempt was cleared by Ruben Dias.

ManCity did better in the direct counter-attack. Bernardo Silva beat Davies and Goretzka on the right wing and fed Rodri. Rodri did not take long to put the Citizens in front 1:0 with a precise shot from around 20 metres into the left corner.

Only a few minutes later (34th), Gündogan almost increased the lead to 2:0 after a rebound. Sommer, however, prevented this with a spectacular foot save. In first-half stoppage time, Sane tried again from distance, but his shot went just wide of the left post. At the half-time break, Pep Guardiola and his team remained in the lead.

Sane fails to beat Ederson, Silva punishes Upamecano mistake

Immediately after the break (49th), Sane had a great chance to make it 1-1, but the 27-year-old failed to beat Ederson with his low shot.

Only a few seconds later, Upamecano created a dangerous situation in the Munich penalty area when he shot at Jack Grealish in an attempt to clear the ball, but City were unable to capitalise. In the 54th, Ederson parried another Sane finish. On the opposite flank, Sommer deflected a Dias header over the bar. In the 70th minute, even the FCB keeper was powerless. After another mistake by Upamecano, Haaland served Silva perfectly and the Portuguese increased the lead to 2:0 with a header.

The second goal threw Bayern completely off course. The defence, especially Upamecano, looked visibly unsettled. Haaland made the final decision in the 76th minute. After a corner, Jones rose highest and served the Norwegian at the far post. The Norwegian scored ice-coldly to make it 3:0.

In the final phase of the game, the Skyblues did not let anything happen. In the 87th minute, Rodri almost increased the lead to 4:0, but Sommer was again on hand to deal with the Spaniard’s header. In the end, Bayern suffered a deserved 3-0 defeat and will need a minor football miracle on 19 April to turn the game around against the English champions.

Bayern will continue their Bundesliga campaign next Saturday when they host TSG Hoffenheim at home in the Allianz Arena.
