Tonight (9 p.m., Paris), FC Bayern faces its most important match of the season so far in Paris. In the first leg of the Champions League round of 16, the foundation is to be laid for a place in the next round. Naturally, there is some discussion about the possible lineup of the Munich team in the run-up to the big match. There are signs of a small surprise at FC Bayern.
Julian Nagelsmann should be as accurate as possible in his choice of eleven players to ensure that the away trip to Paris ends on a positive note. The team does not line up by itself, especially on offense, where Thomas Müller, Jamal Musiala, Kingsley Coman, Serge Gnabry, Leroy Sane and Eric Maxim Choupo-Moting are six candidates for four spots.
The „kicker“ expects that Gnabry and Choupo-Moting will initially have to take a seat on the bench. In the case of Gnabry, this would not be surprising, as the 27-year-old has played very inconsistently recently and made headlines with his Paris outing. Nagelsmann doesn’t seem to assume that the player will be able to make as much of a splash at Prinzenpark as he did at Fashion Week.
Does Nagelsmann rely on Müller in the center of attack?:
It is surprising, however, that Choupo-Moting is apparently not in the starting lineup either. After all, the Cameroonian has been virtually untouchable since October 2022 and fills the center forward role very well.
However, the Cameroonian has struggled a bit in the last three Bundesliga games, which is why the momentum is a bit against him. In addition, the striker has recently been struggling with gastrointestinal complaints. Accordingly, it cannot be ruled out that the „kicker“ is correct with his assumption. From Choupo-Moting’s point of view, however, a place on the bench against his former colleagues would be bitter.
On the other hand, it has been possible to observe over several months that a classic center forward is good for the game and that Müller does not really flourish in the front line. However, with his header strength, he would be an excellent recipient for Cancelo’s precise crosses. The decision on who sits on the bench next to Gnabry will ultimately probably come down to Choupo-Moting, Sane and Müller.
