Tom Bischof is among the standout performers for the German national team in the first few weeks under Jürgen Klopp. However, Lothar Matthäus sees one major hurdle ahead for the young Bayern player.
Tom Bischof has clearly made a name for himself on the German national team in recent weeks. Under Jürgen Klopp, the 21-year-old got his chances—and knew how to make the most of them. The FC Bayern midfielder made a particularly strong impression in the 2-0 victory over Serbia with his goal that put Germany up 1-0.
Lothar Matthäus has also been closely following the youngster’s development. For the all-time national team leader, Bischof is one of the positive surprises of the first international window under Klopp. The Bayern pro has thus put himself in a strong position in the race for further call-ups.
However, the path to a starting spot is not entirely clear. Competition in central midfield is fierce within the DFB. In the “number 8” position, Matthäus currently sees Felix Nmecha, above all, as the benchmark for Bischof.
It will therefore be crucial whether the 21-year-old can continue his development at FC Bayern as well. That is precisely where Matthäus currently sees the biggest problem.
Bischof must also prove himself at Bayern
In his analysis for Sport BILD, Matthäus writes about the competition in midfield: “To the right of Kimmich, Dortmund’s Felix Nmecha is the player Tom Bischof needs to challenge.”
From Matthäus’s perspective, the prerequisite for this is clear. Bischof must first establish himself as a key player at the club level: “The Bayern player has the problem that he isn’t a regular starter at his club. If he can convince Kompany, he can also convince Klopp.”

With the international break over, attention turns back to Munich. At FC Bayern, Bischof must hold his own in a star-studded midfield. Joshua Kimmich and Aleksandar Pavlovic are key players there, so competition for spots in the center is fierce.
Bischof has shown in recent weeks that he can nevertheless already play an important role in the club’s future plans. His technical skills, his composure on the ball, and his goal-scoring threat make him an interesting option for Klopp. Matthäus therefore draws a positive interim conclusion despite the still-unresolved situation at FC Bayern: “Bischof is one of the winners of Klopp’s first few weeks.”
