Jonas Urbig is off to a remarkable start in goal for the DFB. With two clean sheets, he’s achieved something that neither Neuer nor Kahn managed.
Jonas Urbig has immediately made his mark in the record books with his first two international appearances. The FC Bayern goalkeeper kept a clean sheet for the full 90 minutes in both the 2-0 win over Serbia and the 0-0 draw in Greece.
According to data provider Opta, Urbig is only the second German goalkeeper since 1977 to achieve this feat in his first two international matches. Prior to this, the only other goalkeeper to do so during that period was Oliver Baumann in 2024.
Particularly noteworthy is the comparison with two Bayern legends. Manuel Neuer conceded two goals in his DFB debut in 2009 during a 7-2 win over the United Arab Emirates. Oliver Kahn also had to pick the ball out of the net once in each of his first two international matches against Switzerland and Georgia.
Urbig Seizes His Chance with the DFB
Jürgen Klopp deliberately kept the 23-year-old in goal against Greece as well. The national team coach explained: “The fact is that all the guys we have here play regularly; with Jonas, it’s different. That’s why we planned for him to get one more game.”
(function(){
var iframe=document.getElementById(‚polls-fcbinside‘);
if(!iframe)return;
window.addEventListener(‚message‘,function(e){
if(e.source!==iframe.contentWindow)return;
var d=e.data||{};
if(d.type===’FOOTY_WIDGET_HEIGHT’&&typeof d.height===’number‘){iframe.style.height=d.height+’px‘;}
});
})();
Urbig repaid that trust. In the 0–0 draw in Thessaloniki, he prevented an early deficit as early as the second minute with a strong save against Georgios Masouras.
Even after the match, Urbig had impressed with his composure and flawless performance. Two appearances, two shutouts—with that, the Bayern keeper has put himself in the running for further DFB call-ups.
At FC Bayern, Urbig is being groomed as a potential successor to Manuel Neuer. Now, at least statistically, the youngster already has a slight edge over his prominent teammate at Germany’s record-holding champions.
