At FC Bayern, plans for the future in goal are already in full swing. While Finn Dahmen and Bernd Leno were most recently mentioned as possible candidates, a much more prominent name has now emerged: Gianluigi Donnarumma.
As reported by TEAMtalk, the Munich club has had its eye on the 27-year-old Manchester City goalkeeper for quite some time. Under normal circumstances, however, signing him would be difficult to imagine. That could change if City is forced to part with key players due to potential sanctions.
It is precisely this scenario that could bring Donnarumma onto the transfer market. In addition to Bayern, Juventus Turin and Inter Milan are also said to be monitoring the situation of the Italian national team goalkeeper.
Donnarumma could present an opportunity for Bayern
A major shakeup between the posts is on the horizon for the German record champions this coming summer. Currently, there are strong indications that Manuel Neuer and Sven Ulreich could retire at the end of the season. Jonas Urbig is then expected to step up as the new No. 1.
Consequently, club officials are on the hunt for another goalkeeper. Until now, there have been strong indications that Bayern would like to sign an experienced backup for Urbig. Finn Dahmen of FC Augsburg is high on the list. As things stand, the 28-year-old would be available on a free transfer this summer, and Augsburg has already signaled that it is, in principle, open to a possible move to a top club.
Bernd Leno is also being linked with a move to Munich. The former German national team player is under contract with Fulham FC, and his contract also expires in the summer of 2027.
Donnarumma, however, would be in a completely different league. The Italian would be unlikely to move to Munich as a traditional backup. If the interest from Bayern were to become more concrete, this could therefore also have implications for the club’s current plans involving Urbig.
No concrete talks with Donnarumma yet
Just how serious Bayern’s interest in Donnarumma actually is remains unclear. TEAMtalk merely reports that the record champions have been keeping an eye on the City star. There has been no mention of negotiations or a concrete offer so far.
In any case, the key factor is likely to be how the situation at Manchester City unfolds. Should the top English club be forced to sell key players, an opportunity could arise on the transfer market that is not yet foreseeable.
One thing is clear: Bayern is looking ahead early to its future goalkeeping lineup. With Dahmen and Leno, two experienced candidates are already being linked to the role behind Urbig. Donnarumma, on the other hand, would be the spectacular solution—and could completely reshuffle the deck in Munich’s goal.
