On Matchday 4 of the Bundesliga, FC Bayern hosted Union Berlin. The record champions cruised to a 7-0 victory at home in the Allianz Arena. While Harry Kane scored a brace—his 100th and 101st Bundesliga goals—Michael Olise recorded the first hat trick of his club career.
Before heading into the two-week international break, coach Vincent Kompany’s team wanted to make another strong statement in the Bundesliga. Compared to the match in Elversberg, Kompany made six changes to the lineup. Among others, Joshua Kimmich and Luis Diaz returned to the starting lineup.
Kompany had to do without Konrad Laimer at the last minute. The Austrian was sidelined with a minor adductor injury.
Bayern dominates; Kane scores his 100th goal
Michael Olise had the first shot of the match after less than two minutes. The Frenchman cut inside from the right wing in his usual style and took a shot from about 16 meters out. Ronnow, however, made a confident save.
What followed was the expected scenario: The Berliners sat deep and initially focused on keeping the spaces in front of their own penalty area tight. As a result, Bayern had a lot of possession but initially struggled to find openings.
In the 18th minute, the record champions were finally rewarded for their dominance. Alphonso Davies won the ball on the left side of the penalty area and laid it back to Jamal Musiala. The attacker had a clear shot from the left side of the box and fired the ball with great power into the right corner, leaving Rönnow with no chance.
Shortly afterward, the Union goalkeeper was on hand to prevent the score from becoming 2-0. After a cross from Kimmich, Tah got his head to the ball, but Rönnow reacted brilliantly and made the save (22′). Josip Stanišić also had a good chance, but Rönnow used his foot to block his attempt from a tight angle as well (26′).
Luis Díaz appeared to score the second goal in the 30th minute, but he was offside when he took his shot after a pass from Olise. Consequently, the goal did not count.
Bayern remained clearly dominant after that as well. In the 32nd minute, however, Manuel Neuer had to come far out of his goal and cleared the ball with a sliding tackle before Jeong could reach it. Otherwise, the Bayern goalkeeper was hardly tested. Shortly before halftime, the pressure from Munich increased significantly once again.
In the 39th minute, Harry Kane made it 2-0. Earlier, Olise had been fouled in the penalty area, earning a penalty kick. The Englishman converted it confidently, scoring his 100th Bundesliga goal in his 98th appearance.
Just four minutes later, Michael Olise added to the lead: Following an assist from Jamal Musiala, the Frenchman scored with a spectacular long-range shot to make it 3–0 (43′). The teams headed into halftime with a commanding lead.
Olise completes his hat trick
Early in the second half, Union suddenly had a double chance to pull one back. First, Skarke set up Haberer, who found himself unmarked in the penalty area, but Neuer managed to tip his shot over the crossbar with a foot save (51′). The ensuing corner was dangerous once again: Tom Rothe got his head to the ball and forced Neuer into another strong save (52′).
Shortly thereafter, Bayern struck again with clinical precision. After a long ball from Joshua Kimmich, Olise broke through on the right flank and delivered a precise cross into the five-meter box. Kane ran onto it and headed the ball in to make it 4-0 (54′).
In the 64th minute, Kane narrowly missed scoring his third goal. Musiala controlled a long ball from Kimmich well, rounded the rushing Rönnow, and then laid it across to Kane. However, his shot was blocked at the last moment by Uduokhai.
In the 67th minute, Bayern once again created a dangerous chance in front of Union’s goal. After Kimmich’s corner, the ball slipped past Rönnow at the far post, but substitute Saibari’s shot from close range was blocked by Rothe, who got there just in time. The ball struck the Berlin player’s arm from close range, but no penalty was called.
Just three minutes later, Saibari finally made it 5–0. Davies found the substitute, who, with the ball at his feet, turned powerfully toward the goal, left three Berlin players in his wake, and slotted the ball past Rönnow with his left foot to make it 5–0 (70th minute).
Now the goals came in quick succession: Substitute Bischof played a precise long ball from his own half to Olise, who controlled it well, rounded the rushing Rönnow, and then, with the help of the post, scored to make it 6–0 (73′).
The 7-0 goal wasn’t long in coming either: Bischof set up Olise with a backheel, and the Frenchman controlled the ball once more before curling a spectacular shot from a central position into the right corner to make it 7-0 (76th minute).
In the closing minutes, Bayern put together another impressive attacking sequence. Saibari was initially denied by Rönnow, but Musiala followed up to put the rebound into the net (90th minute). However, the goal did not count because Saibari had been offside earlier. Thus, the final score remained 7–0.
With this victory, FC Bayern is back at the top of the Bundesliga standings—at least temporarily—though they could be overtaken again on Saturday by Dortmund, Freiburg, and Augsburg.
The Bayern stars now head into a two-week international break. The German record champions’ next match will take place on August 10, when Munich travels to face FC Augsburg.
