FC Bayern celebrated an important victory at SV Elversberg on Sunday to wrap up the Bundesliga matchday. Elversberg put up a fight, but Bayern had the stamina to see it through in the end.
Lennart Karl and Harry Kane scored for Bayern, while Maurice Krattenmacher briefly equalized for Elversberg. Bayern, in particular, showed a strong response after the newly promoted team tied the game.
Coach Vincent Kompany spoke to DAZN after the match about the game and noted that the first half was anything but good and did not meet the standards expected of the record champions.
Kompany: “Mentally, we were a step too slow.”
“It felt like we had a bit of a hard time getting into the game today. In the last two games, we had big chances early on but failed to convert that one chance. Then there are phases where you just need a little time to get back on track. Today, for example, we weren’t as dominant from the start as we were at times against Schalke and Bodø,” explained the Bayern coach.
In particular, Kompany lacked clarity and focus at the start. “We just weren’t there at the beginning. They played well, they were brave, and we weren’t as precise—even on the ball—as we usually are. When your counter-pressing isn’t that intense, it’s the kind of game where you don’t get any gifts. If we’re not 100% focused, every game is difficult. And we made up for it in the end,” the Belgian said, hitting the nail on the head.
However, he noted that one of Bayern’s greatest strengths is definitely being able to rely on their roster. Every player who comes off the bench can make a positive impact. But Kompany emphasized once again: “Mentally, we were a step too slow at the start. That makes things hard for ourselves.”
