FC Bayern enters its Champions League opener against Bodo/Glimt as the clear favorite. Nevertheless, an opponent that has already caused upsets in Europe awaits them on Thursday at the Allianz Arena. A former Norwegian national team player warns the Munich side in particular about the offensive strength and mentality of the Norwegian league leaders.
Håvard Nordtveit knows Norwegian soccer inside and out. The former Bundesliga pro made 50 appearances for the Norwegian national team himself. The former Gladbach player believes Bodo/Glimt is capable of putting up a good fight against Bayern.
“This is a team with tremendous offensive qualities and a solid defensive structure,” Nordtveit explained in an interview with Absolut Fußball. He noted that it’s particularly remarkable how the Norwegians never give up, even after setbacks: In his opinion, Bodo/Glimt can score against any team: “They just keep pushing forward,” said the 36-year-old.
Bayern must therefore prepare for an opponent that won’t rely exclusively on defense. Last season, Bodo/Glimt caused a stir with victories over European giants such as Manchester City and Inter Milan.
Against the top Italian club, the Norwegians even managed to win twice in the playoffs, advancing to the Round of 16 in the Champions League. There, after a 3-0 victory in the first leg, they were eliminated by Sporting Lisbon.
Kompany impressed by their progress
Vincent Kompany has also been closely studying their first Champions League opponent. The Bayern coach appeared quite impressed by the Norwegian club’s progress.
“Bodø/Glimt is a great story for soccer,” Kompany explained. The more closely you analyze the team, the clearer it becomes that their success is the result of a clear strategy.
Kompany also finds it remarkable that Bodø/Glimt can hold its own against larger European clubs despite having significantly fewer financial resources.
Manuel Neuer, too, expects a tough challenge on Thursday. The Bayern captain knows that Bodø/Glimt won’t be coming to the Allianz Arena with any fear.
“They’ve shown that they’re not afraid to face big-name teams. We’ve been warned; we know how they’ve performed against other top teams. They play without fear—they have nothing to lose,” Neuer explained.
Neuer’s assessment aligns with those of Kompany and Nordtveit: Bayern must not underestimate the Norwegian underdog under any circumstances. Following the disappointing 0–0 draw at Schalke, the Munich team also wants to bounce back and get off to a winning start in the Champions League.
