Raphael Guerreiro remains a free agent following his departure from FC Bayern. Most recently, AS Roma was considered a potential suitor—but that lead appears to have gone cold as well.
More than two months after leaving FC Bayern, Raphaël Guerreiro’s future in professional soccer remains uncertain. The 32-year-old’s contract with the German record champions expired at the end of June and was not renewed. Since then, the Portuguese player has been looking for a new club.
Bayern had already officially announced back in March that they would part ways this summer. Sporting director Max Eberl bid Guerreiro farewell with warm words at the time: “We’d like to thank Rapha sincerely for his time with us.” He said the Portuguese player had “always been reliable on the field.”
Guerreiro had left FC Bayern after three years. In his final season, he celebrated winning the German championship and the DFB Cup with the Munich club. In addition, Vincent Kompany’s team reached the semifinals of the Champions League.
Nevertheless, the versatile left-footed player has not yet found a new club. Yet there has been no shortage of interested clubs linked to Guerreiro in recent weeks.
The trail to AS Roma appears to have gone cold
As early as late July, AC Milan was considered a potential suitor. According to reports at the time from *Tuttosport* and *La Gazzetta dello Sport*, the Rossoneri were exploring the possibility of signing the former Bayern player on a free transfer. However, this lead never materialized.
Bayer Leverkusen and Benfica Lisbon were also mentioned as possible destinations at one point. Most recently, AS Roma came into focus. According to La Gazzetta dello Sport, the Romans were interested in Guerreiro because coach Gian Piero Gasperini has few alternatives available on the left side of the defense.

But apparently, this lead isn’t leading to a transfer either at the moment. According to media reports, AS Roma’s interest in signing the Portuguese player is now limited.
For Guerreiro, the search thus continues. The player, who has made 65 appearances for the Portuguese national team, has plenty of experience at the highest level from his stints with Borussia Dortmund and FC Bayern. Added to that is his versatility: in addition to the left side of defense, Guerreiro can also play in central midfield.
As a free agent, Guerreiro is not bound by the end of a transfer window and can, in principle, sign with a new club even during the current season. However, it remains completely unclear where the 2016 European champion will continue his career.
