How well does the collaboration between Max Eberl and Christoph Freund really work at FC Bayern? In recent months, there have been repeated reports suggesting that the relationship between the two officials is strained. Eberl has now flatly denied these speculations.
In an interview with Sport BILD, the sporting director was asked directly about the rumors of an allegedly strained relationship with Freund. His response was unambiguous.
“That’s bullshit! It’s a far-fetched story that I can’t make sense of. I don’t know where it came from.”
Eberl then emphasized that, from his perspective, the collaboration with the sporting director is working very well: “Christoph and I have been working together at FC Bayern for two and a half years, and as far as I can tell, we’re doing very well together. Everyone has clear responsibilities; it’s fun and enjoyable. We work day and night to do what’s best for FC Bayern.”
Eberl clearly advocates for extending Freund’s contract
These statements are also interesting in light of Freund’s future in Munich. While Eberl’s contract was recently extended through 2029, the Austrian’s contract is set to expire next summer.
Recently, there have been conflicting reports about Freund’s situation. Generally speaking, the 49-year-old enjoys strong support within the club. According to information from the Abendzeitung, however, Freund is reportedly still in a period of reflection and first wants clarity regarding his future role and the structures within his area of responsibility.

For Eberl himself, on the other hand, there is no doubt whatsoever that FC Bayern should continue with Freund. As sporting director, he is directly involved in the decision regarding Freund’s future.
“His contract extension is something that should be handled quickly and quietly. For me, there’s no question as to whether his contract will be extended or not,” Eberl clarified.
