Vincent Kompany makes no secret of the goals he has set for himself with FC Bayern. The Belgian wants to not only win titles in Germany with the Munich club, but also claim the European soccer throne. His bold statement has apparently been very well received by the record-holding champions’ management.
Even during the Asian tour, Kompany had already made it clear publicly that winning the Champions League is one of his major goals for the new season. Instead of hiding behind the usual platitudes and merely talking about performing as successfully as possible in the Champions League, the 40-year-old articulated his ambitions in no uncertain terms.
As Sport BILD reports, Kompany has struck a chord internally with this attitude. Both the supervisory board and the club’s management are said to have been very impressed that the Bayern coach is publicly demonstrating his determination to succeed.

At the German record champions, Kompany’s forthright approach to his own goals is thus seen as an expression of the club’s traditional self-image. Club officials prefer an ambitious coach who openly states what FC Bayern aims to achieve over one who hides behind cautious phrasing or familiar soccer clichés.
The fact that Kompany publicly states winning the Champions League as a goal is therefore not perceived as unnecessary additional pressure. Rather, the club’s leadership apparently appreciates that the Belgian fully identifies with the club’s aspirations.
At FC Bayern, it is traditionally part of the club’s identity to aim to win every competition. Expectations are particularly high in the Champions League. The last triumph in Europe’s premier club competition was several years ago. In 2020, the Munich team won the Champions League under Hansi Flick.
Since then, the record champions have been waiting for their next European title. Kompany wants to end this dry spell.
The Champions League as the Next Big Step
So far in his tenure, Kompany has already shown that he can handle high expectations. Now it’s time for the next step. Last season, Bayern didn’t fall until the Champions League semifinals, losing to Paris Saint-Germain. Consequently, the ambition to go even further this time around is immense.
The club’s leadership seems to be giving their coach their full support in this endeavor. Kompany is thus setting the bar very high for himself. At the same time, this very ambition fits perfectly with a club where domestic titles alone are not enough in the long run.
