The mood at FC Bayern is upbeat after their season-opening victory over VfB Stuttgart. The 5-1 win not only gave the team a boost heading into their next matches but also set a new record.
With this lopsided victory over Stuttgart, FC Bayern has immediately taken the top spot in the Bundesliga. Not only as of Friday, but also after the first matchday, Bayern sits at the top of the standings.
That’s not unusual in itself—and certainly not surprising after a 5–1 win. Nevertheless, this position in the standings underscores the record champions’ overwhelming dominance.
Bayern has been at the top for 67 matchdays
By claiming the top spot after the first matchday, Bayern has now set a new record. FC Bayern has now finished at the top of the table at the end of a matchday 67 times in a row. No one has ever achieved this before, and it confirms the outstanding progress made under Vincent Kompany.
Incidentally, the last time Bayern weren’t at the top of the table was after Matchday 2 of Kompany’s debut season in 2024/25. At that time, they were in second place with six points but “only” a 5-2 goal difference. They trailed 1. FC Heidenheim, which now plays in the 2. Bundesliga. Frank Schmidt’s team was thus the last side to finish ahead of the record champions after a matchday.
If Bayern has its way, this record will only be extended further in the new season. On Saturday, they’ll play at Schalke, where they’re naturally the overwhelming favorites. Another victory is therefore entirely realistic for the record champions—and, if the game goes their way, it could even be a decisive one.
It’s interesting to note that if Bayern repeats its “perfect” season, they could end up at the top of the table for exactly 100 consecutive matchdays after 34 rounds. But that’s still a long way off for now.
