Competition at FC Bayern has traditionally been fierce. Anyone who wants to make a name for themselves at the German record champions must not only possess exceptional talent but, ideally, demonstrate it from day one. According to Tim Kleindienst, there isn’t much time left to settle in at Bayern Munich.
In recent years, there have been repeated high-profile examples of players who joined FC Bayern with high expectations but were unable to establish themselves long-term. Most recently, Sacha Boey and João Palhinha were among them. While Palhinha has since left Munich, Boey was also on the list of players up for sale this summer.
Just how difficult the situation can be for new signings is also recognized outside of Munich. Gladbach forward Kleindienst spoke at length on “At Broski – Die Sport Show” about the unique demands at the record-holding champions.
“They expect you to perform at the highest level right away.”
For Kleindienst, the situation at FC Bayern is difficult to compare with that at other Bundesliga clubs. The sheer quality within the team alone ensures that every new signing is immediately under pressure.
“I think it’s a whole different level when you play for Bayern. You’re surrounded by national team players who expect you to perform at your absolute best,” the forward explained.
From the Gladbach player’s perspective, the situation in Munich has also changed. In his view, players who initially struggle are hardly given any time to adjust to the new environment and the high demands over an extended period.
“Bayern is no longer the kind of club where you’re allowed much time to find your feet. You can see that with Palhinha and all the others. If they aren’t ready right away, they don’t play a role. And then it stays that way, because no one has the imagination to think it will get any better,” Kleindienst emphasized.
In doing so, the forward describes a dynamic that can quickly emerge, especially in a squad with numerous national team players. If a new signing can’t capitalize on his first opportunities, the next top-class player is already waiting in the wings.
“They’re all incredibly good players.”
Kleindienst has no doubt whatsoever about the fundamental qualities of the players in question. Rather, he sees the problem in regaining status at FC Bayern once it’s been lost.
“They’re all incredibly good players. But once things have gone a certain way, I get the feeling that’s the end of the story,” explained the Gladbach player.
Bayern’s latest signings show that things can go differently. Nathaniel Brown and Ismael Saibari immediately made a name for themselves in their first weeks in Munich. Brown already impressed in the Super Cup against Borussia Dortmund, while Saibari set up two goals right after coming off the bench in the 5-1 win over VfB Stuttgart.
Performances like these are particularly valuable given the level of competition. Those who seize their opportunities right away can quickly establish a strong foothold.
However, Kleindienst’s comments also highlight the other side of a move to the record champions. Simply having the quality to play for FC Bayern isn’t necessarily enough. In Munich, top players must bring that quality to the field as quickly as possible—otherwise, the next opportunity may be a long time coming.
