FC Bayern Munich has gotten off to a strong start in the new season. They won 5–1 against Stuttgart in the league, and had previously won the Super Cup against Dortmund. So the mood is upbeat, but expert Stefan Effenberg has now issued a warning to Bayern.
That’s because, according to Effenberg, the record champions could face a critical situation on offense in the foreseeable future if they fail to extend contracts soon.
“They need to get clarity on their key players as soon as possible. What about Harry Kane, Luis Díaz, or Michael Olise next year?” said the former Bayern captain in an interview with t-online.
Effenberg Issues a Warning to FC Bayern
Effenberg doesn’t mean that an immediate departure is imminent if the players don’t extend their contracts. Rather, he’s pointing out that constant speculation about the players’ futures creates unrest. And in the case of Michael Olise in particular, we saw over the summer just how quickly something like that can happen.
“And that’s exactly what would be disastrous: if such speculation resurfaces—because Bayern fails to reach an agreement on new contracts with these players relatively quickly. The faster, the sooner, the better. Speed is of the essence. Otherwise, the rumor mill will start churning again, and unrest will creep into the club—that’s the last thing they want. And the three players mentioned aren’t the only ones,” Effenberg explained regarding the current situation.
Who else is Effenberg thinking of? “Manuel Neuer, for example. What will the decision be there? How will the changed dynamic with his designated successor, Jonas Urbig—who is expected to get more playing time—work out as early as this season?“ These are all issues that FC Bayern’s management must address now, or at least in the coming weeks and months.
