Maycon Cardozo is one of the big winners of FC Bayern’s summer training camp. For a long time, it seemed likely that the 17-year-old would be sent out on loan. However, following his strong performances, the Munich club appears to have had a change of heart. Vincent Kompany could keep the talented young forward with the first team on a permanent basis.
FC Bayern is deliberately fielding a comparatively small first-team roster for the new season. The idea behind this is to give the club’s own youth players better opportunities for playing time. Cardozo could be one of the biggest beneficiaries.
As Sky reports, Bayern officials’ assessment of the Brazilian has changed during preseason. A loan was originally seen as a sensible move to give the youngster regular playing time at a higher level. Now, however, such an arrangement is apparently no longer a certainty.
The reason: Cardozo has impressed Kompany with his performances.
Cardozo Impresses on the Asia Tour
The 17-year-old drew particular attention with his bold and dynamic style of play. Even in the tough test against Aston Villa, Cardozo did not shy away from physical duels with the significantly more experienced Premier League pros.
Several clubs from Germany and abroad are said to have already expressed interest in signing him on loan. Nevertheless, Cardozo is expected to remain in Munich and be gradually introduced to a more prominent role.
On the left wing, Luis Díaz is the clear starter for now. Behind him, Arijon Ibrahimovic is considered the first alternative. Cardozo could train regularly with the first team as an additional option and get playing time when opportunities arise.
Bayern is increasingly relying on its young talents
Cardozo isn’t the only youngster who has made the most of preseason. Bastian Assomo, just 16 years old, also drew attention with his goal against Jeju SK and his physical presence.
Cardozo does have one advantage, however: He made his professional debut last season and is familiar with the routines at Kompany.
According to Sky, the Brazilian himself would like to stay in Munich for now and fight for his spot. Lennart Karl could serve as a role model, as he was able to establish himself permanently with the pros through convincing performances.
