Alexander Nübel is set to return to FC Bayern—but the goalkeeper does not appear to have a future at Säbener Straße. According to recent reports, the Munich club is pushing for a sale but is facing significant obstacles.
What was once considered a promising free transfer is increasingly turning into a complicated personnel issue for FC Bayern. After his loan stints at AS Monaco and VfB Stuttgart, Alexander Nübel will officially return to Munich this summer.
On the field, however, the 29-year-old apparently no longer plays a role in the German record champions’ plans.
Bayern no longer has plans for Nübel
As Sky reports, sporting director Max Eberl sought a meeting with Nübel’s agent, Stefan Backs, several weeks ago. According to club officials, it was made clear during that meeting that FC Bayern no longer plans to include the goalkeeper in its future plans.
According to the report, the message even went so far as to suggest that the Munich club would have preferred Nübel not to return at all for the start of training on July 20. The goal is clear: the goalkeeper is expected to leave the club permanently.
BILD’s soccer editor, Christian Falk, also reports that FC Bayern is seeking to sell him. According to the report, Nübel was informed that the most he could hope for in Munich would be the role of backup goalkeeper.
His contract and salary are complicating his departure

A quick transfer is likely to be difficult, however. Nübel’s contract with FC Bayern runs until June 30, 2029. Added to this is a salary that many potential suitors would find difficult to afford. According to reports, it amounts to just under 12 million euros per year.
According to consistent media reports, the goalkeeper is currently unwilling to accept a significant pay cut. It is precisely this point that makes the search for a new club considerably more difficult.
For this reason, there are currently strong indications that Nübel will return to Munich for the time being—even though his playing prospects with the record-holding champions are extremely limited.
In the long term, however, the 2028 European Championship could bring some movement to the situation. If the national team goalkeeper wants to maintain his hopes of a starting spot on the DFB squad, regular playing time will likely be essential. It is precisely this circumstance that could ultimately persuade Nübel to make a move—even if it means taking a financial hit.
