Jonas Urbig’s steep rise apparently continues: the Bayern keeper is to travel to the World Cup with the German national team – albeit in a special role
Jonas Urbig is apparently about to take the next big step in his young career. As reported by BILD, the 22-year-old will travel with the German national team to the World Cup in the USA, Canada and Mexico as an additional training goalkeeper
This would be the Bayern keeper’s first appearance at a major DFB tournament – just a few months after moving from 1. FC Köln to Säbener Straße
For Urbig, participation in the World Cup would be the next reward for his strong development at FC Bayern. Internally, the U21 international has long enjoyed a high reputation and is regarded as the designated successor to Manuel Neuer
Just a few days ago, the record champions extended the contracts of Neuer and Sven Ulreich and at the same time made it clear that Urbig would be gradually built up in the future
National coach Julian Nagelsmann also seems to be convinced of the goalkeeper’s talent
Neuer probably number one – Baumann and Nübel also included
According to BILD, the DFB’s goalkeeping team for the World Cup has also been decided
According to the report, Nagelsmann is planning with Manuel Neuer as number 1, with Oliver Baumann taking on the role of stand-in keeper
According to the report, Alexander Nübel will travel to the World Cup as the third official goalkeeper
The national coach is said to have already personally informed the keeper, who is currently on loan to VfB Stuttgart, of the decision
It would be Nübel’s first participation in a World Cup, which is particularly bitter: the 29-year-old was left out of the final squad shortly before the start of the 2024 European Championship at home
Now, it seems, he will receive a belated reward for his strong performances in recent months
Urbig gains valuable experience
Even though Urbig will probably not officially be part of the matchday squad at the World Cup, the trip could be hugely valuable for his further development

The 22-year-old would work with Neuer, Baumann and the coaching team on a daily basis for several weeks and could gain important experience at the highest international level
Those responsible at FC Bayern currently see this as the perfect step in the young keeper’s development.
