Manuel Neuer’s future at FC Bayern continues to take shape: Christoph Freund confirmed positive talks about a contract extension
At the press conference ahead of the Bundesliga match against 1. FC Heidenheim, Freund made it clear that both sides are already in intensive discussions. „Of course we are talking to each other. There are good talks, but nothing further to announce yet,“ explained the sporting director, emphasizing at the same time that a final decision should not be too long in coming: „Today is May 1st, the season is not endlessly long and therefore there are talks.“
Even though no signature has yet been made, it looks as though Neuer could extend his expiring contract by a further year. Talks are taking place behind the scenes with advisor Thomas Kroth, who was at Säbener Straße yesterday. One thing is clear: both sides want to find a sustainable solution for the future – both in sporting and financial terms
What role does Jonas Urbig play?
A central point in the talks is the future goalkeeping hierarchy – and thus the role of Jonas Urbig. The young goalkeeper is considered the designated successor at FC Bayern and is expected to gradually take on more responsibility. Internally, a model is apparently being discussed in which Neuer remains number one, but at the same time specifically hands games over to Urbig

Urbig, who has been regarded as a great talent since his move to Munich, will not only benefit from playing time, but also from Neuer’s experience, who will act as a mentor: „Manu is now at an advanced age and is passing on his experience,“ explained Freund, adding: „Jonas will benefit greatly from this.“
Freund also emphasized that the transition after an era like Neuer’s at FC Bayern is „not that easy“. Nevertheless, he is positive about the future: „If we can all manage this together, it would be a great success.“
