Thomas Müller has spoken in more detail for the first time about his departure from FC Bayern – and highlighted one critical point in particular
The 2014 world champion generally looks back positively on his departure from the German record champions, but makes it clear that not everything went smoothly. In the „Bestbesetzung“ format on MagentaTV, the 36-year-old explained: „There were of course discrepancies in the process, especially in terms of communication, regarding the path to the decision and how I was taken along.“
Change of opinion causes irritation
The sudden change of course within the club caused particular confusion for Müller. In January 2025, sporting director Max Eberl had signaled that an extension was a formality if Müller wanted to continue
Instead, a few weeks later, those responsible decided against further cooperation. For Müller, this turnaround came as a surprise: „There was a change of opinion … But it passed me by a little.“
It was this lack of involvement in the decision-making process that ultimately caused displeasure for the veteran. „From the club’s perspective, I wasn’t involved,“ he clarified
A respectful farewell nonetheless
Despite this criticism, Müller emphasized that the farewell itself went very well. „I felt the respect and appreciation from everyone involved,“ he explained
His overall conclusion is therefore positive – with one clear caveat: „Everything was wonderful from A to Z – apart from this one process.“
This statement shows that it was less about the decision itself and more about the path to it
The attacking player deliberately left open the question of whether Müller would return to FC Bayern in a different role in the future: „I’m not ruling anything out. I’ll just let it come to me,“ he said
This at least leaves the door wide open for a possible comeback off the pitch.
