In a recent interview with kicker, national coach Julian Nagelsmann himself admitted how intensively the goalkeeping issue is being discussed: „This is actually the position that we discuss the most in the coaching calls.“
Against this backdrop, it seems understandable that the DFB coach wants to give a young keeper an early insight into the top level. The nomination can be seen as a strategic step to build up alternatives in goal
Long-term planning is also clearly defined at FC Bayern. Internally, Urbig is seen as a possible successor to Manuel Neuer and is currently gaining valuable experience in the professional game. The development at the record champions and the possible DFB appointment are intertwined

Despite these sporting arguments, the decision is not without controversy. The possible nomination is being critically questioned on social networks in particular, especially on the X platform
One X user wrote: „Jonas Urbig has played 8 (EIGHT!!!) league games this season and Nagelsmann is now taking him with him – for what? For the future? Funnily enough, he couldn’t do that with Atubolu for the future, even though he’s been a regular keeper all season.“
There are also fundamental doubts about the national team coach’s approach, with another commenting: „Nagelsmann once started out with the claim of pursuing a clear performance principle…“
These voices show that the discussion is not only about Urbig himself, but also about the general direction of the DFB team. There seems to be a tension between the performance principle and future planning, which Nagelsmann is consciously accepting
Regardless of the public debate, however, the nomination of Urbig sends a clear signal. The Bayern keeper is one of the most exciting goalkeepers of his generation – and could play a formative role both at FC Bayern and in the national team in the coming years.
