Some career decisions stay with you even years later, especially when they have affected opportunities that you would rather not have missed out on in hindsight. Now a former Bayern player talks about just such a moment.
Lucas Scholl revealed in the YouTube format Einfach Fussball that he once turned down an offer from Borussia Dortmund. „I had an offer from Dortmund at the time, I should have accepted it,“ said the now 29-year-old looking back. At the time, he was playing in FC Bayern’s youth team and decided to stay at Säbener Straße – a decision that he now considers a mistake.
The son of club legend Mehmet Scholl went through all the youth teams at the record champions right up to the second team. However, he did not make the leap to the professionals. Although he was allowed to train under Pep Guardiola for a while, the competition was enormous. „All 22 players were top, every position was double or triple top,“ Scholl described the situation.
Second career as Bayern coach?

At only 60 kilograms, the midfielder lacked the necessary physicality for the Bundesliga. He left the club at the beginning of 2017 and joined Wacker Nordhausen. He turned down a previous offer from FC Luzern, as he was initially supposed to play in the second team there and also work in the fan store. He felt that this was derogatory.
After further spells at VfR Garching and SV Horn, Scholl is now under contract with FC Wacker Innsbruck in Austria’s third division. He has made eight appearances so far this season, but has been left out of the squad recently. At the same time, he works as a youth coach at FC Bayern and is preparing for a career as a coach in professional soccer.
