Just a few months ago, Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern was considered uncertain. In the meantime, the mood at the German record champions has apparently shifted significantly. Club president Uli Hoeneß has now sent a clear signal in support of the sporting director.
Max Eberl’s contract with FC Bayern runs through the summer of 2027. For a long time, there was speculation about whether the 52-year-old would remain in Munich beyond that point. However, following a successful season and a promising start to the summer transfer window, his prospects appear to have improved significantly.
Back in late May, Uli Hoeneß had told SPIEGEL that the odds of a contract extension stood at “60 to 40.” Just under two months later, his assessment is now much more definitive.
Hoeneß: “One hundred percent at the moment”
On the sidelines of the friendly match against FC Rottach-Egern, the honorary president of FC Bayern was once again asked about Eberl’s future. When asked how likely it was that the sporting director would extend his contract, Hoeneß replied unequivocally: “One hundred percent at the moment.”
With this, the 74-year-old is sending a clear signal, following recent repeated speculation about Eberl’s position.
The sporting director has made a strong case for himself in recent weeks. By signing Ismael Saibari and Nathaniel Brown early on, the record champions secured two players Vincent Kompany had been targeting. At the same time, the Munich club has already generated more than 30 million euros through several player sales.
Eberl is focusing on day-to-day operations
While Hoeneß is publicly expressing optimism, Eberl himself remains cautious. The Bayern boss recently emphasized that his focus is exclusively on the current transfer window and the club’s on-field development.
He said he does not want to think about his personal future at this time. Instead, his full attention is on further squad planning and the remaining tasks in the transfer market.
A final decision on a contract extension is unlikely to be made until a later date, however. As things stand, FC Bayern’s supervisory board is expected to address the matter next spring.
However, Uli Hoeneß’s recent statements leave little doubt that Eberl currently enjoys a high level of trust within the club. Following FC Bayern’s return to domestic success and a strong start to the transfer window, the signs currently point clearly toward the sporting director staying on.
