FC Bayern have lost for the first time in the Bundesliga. The dream of an unbeaten season is over after the 2-1 defeat against FC Augsburg. Coach Vincent Kompany assesses the defeat and explains why he is not driven by records.
After the first Bundesliga defeat of the current season, FC Bayern Munich ’s plan for a flawless championship is history. The 2-1 defeat against FCA put an end to the streak and not only provided a talking point in Munich, but also prompted reactions from Leverkusen, where fans gleefully reminded the club that only Bayer Leverkusen had previously been able to celebrate a German championship title without defeat.
Particularly annoying from Bayern’s point of view was the fact that their opponents from Augsburg had arrived in 15th place in the table. Accordingly, the focus after the final whistle was less on the situation in the table and more on the missed historic opportunity. The result was shown in the BayArena, accompanied by mocking chants from the Leverkusen supporters.
Coach Vincent Kompany ’s reaction to the missed „invincible“ season was emphatically calm. At the post-match press conference, he explained: „If we can now go another ten months unbeaten, then everything will be fine for me.“ For him, the focus was not on a personal milestone, but on his team’s sporting progress.
Kompany heralds a „new start“

The 39-year-old made it clear that individual records are not a priority for him. „It’s not about my record, it’s not about everything,“ said Kompany, clearly putting his players in the spotlight. What matters is that the team wins, wins titles and continues to develop – regardless of whether they manage a season without defeat.
The Bayern coach was also matter-of-fact about the significance of defeat. „You might not have this record, but you still win a lot, you lose sometimes – and it’s fun,“ he explained. In the end, prizes and titles are what count, „and then I can live without this ‚Invincible'“.
Despite the setback, Kompany does not see a break in the season. „But we will still keep trying to win everything. It will not be a new zero, not a new start,“ he made clear. The focus remains on the next game and on the reaction on the pitch.
