Max Eberl’s future at FC Bayern is becoming more and more concrete. According to the latest reports, the 52-year-old is on the verge of extending his contract with the German record champions
While Max Eberl is currently conducting many contract negotiations, there is also a debate going on in the background at FC Bayern about his future at Säbener Straße. The 52-year-old’s contract runs until the summer of 2027. As reported by BILD, the club management and supervisory board are intensively discussing his future. This was triggered, among other things, by a much-noticed TV appearance by Eberl, in which he himself made a public statement
„That is the decision of the supervisory board, I have nothing to do with it. I can only do a good job,“ Eberl explained there, while also making it clear that he would be open to an extension. For Christian Falk, this statement is an important signal. „Max says yes, the supervisory board must get in touch with him. He will be pleased. So Max would be willing to extend his contract,“ emphasised the BILD soccer boss in the Bayern Insider podcast
Supervisory board meetings as a key moment
Behind the scenes, the decision seems to be just a question of timing. According to information from Falk, two important meetings of the supervisory board are still to come. „I’ve heard that there are supervisory board meetings at the end of the year, one in August and one in November. And that’s when Max’s future is to be decided at the latest,“ he reports. The trend is clear: „From what I hear, the signals are green.“
BILD reporter Tobi Altschäffl also refers to the time frame. By the summer at the latest, when Eberl’s contract has less than a year remaining, there should be movement on the matter. „That would be a time when people would want to talk about it,“ explains Altschäffl. Internally, Eberl has long been regarded as a central figure for the sporting and economic restructuring of the club
Good work – but not without friction
Despite the positive mood, there are certainly critical voices within the club. In particular, Eberl is repeatedly criticized on the subject of salaries. „Where there are positive voices, there are also negative ones,“ says Altschäffl, referring to the discussions surrounding high-paying contracts. „Do we really need that? Do we have to go that high?“
The ongoing negotiations with Dayot Upamecano in particular are seen internally as a touchstone for Eberl’s line. Nevertheless, the overall assessment for Altschäffl is clearly positive. „His work is good, it’s very good. His business card is so well-stocked that you have to extend it – from Bayern’s point of view,“ he states unequivocally
Another point of internal debate concerns Eberl’s closest colleagues. Chief scout Nils Schmadtke stands for a radical restructuring of the scouting department, which has not met with universal approval. „Nine scouts in the Bayern cosmos have now left,“ reports Altschäffl. This is causing unrest in parts of the management team
At the same time, Schmadtke is valued professionally. „The work also speaks for Schmadtke,“ emphasizes Altschäffl – and makes it clear that Eberl’s right hand will hardly be taken away. Falk also sees the responsibility clearly with the sports director. „If you are the head of the department, you should be allowed to decide on your own personnel,“ he says.
