Jonas Urbig was surprisingly in goal for FC Bayern in Stuttgart – and revealed after the 5:0 away win how he found out about his deployment at such short notice.
The 22-year-old was a surprise inclusion in the starting eleven, while Manuel Neuer initially remained on the bench. Urbig said after the game: „We put in a great team performance. It was a difficult game for 60 minutes. Then we made another change, brought in fresh players, which is so important. Then we finished it off very well.“
The keeper also revealed how quickly he found out about his starting role: „I found out this morning at 11 a.m. that I was playing. Of course I’m happy when I get to play. I’m always prepared, we always prepare together as a goalkeeping team.“
Kompany rotates through
Coach Vincent Kompany had already explained before the game why he put the 22-year-old in goal. The coach referred to the high workload: „We have three games in six days. We want to use the squad. Jonas has never disappointed so far and has always helped us. We always look for the right moment so that he gets his minutes and can continue his development. We also discussed this with Manu and decided to do it today rather than next week. After that, everything goes back to normal.“
It wasn’t the only change: Kompany rotated in several places, with Minjae Kim, Raphael Guerreiro, Leon Goretzka, Tom Bischof and Nicolas Jackson coming into the team alongside Urbig. Harry Kane was initially left out, but took on the role of match-winner again after his substitution: the Englishman scored three times, changing the statics of the match in the space of a few minutes.
Urbig impressed above all with his calmness and concentration, and he also set up Laimer’s 1:0 goal with a long ball.
