What a magical moment in the Allianz Arena! FC Bayern got off to a lightning start in their Champions League home match against FC Brugge that one player in particular will probably never forget: Young talent Lennart Karl scored a dream goal after just five minutes – and made club history in the process.

Coach Vincent Kompany had caused a surprise with his line-up when he called 17-year-old Karl into the starting eleven. The youngster repaid his coach’s trust in impressive fashion: with a powerful shot from around 18 metres into the corner, he gave the German record champions an early lead – and sent the Allianz Arena into raptures.

Karl beats Musiala’s record

With his goal, Lennart Karl became the youngest goalscorer in FC Bayern’s long and glorious Champions League history. On the evening of his big moment, the home-grown player was exactly 17 years and 242 days old.

Jamal Musiala had previously held this record. The Munich attacking gem had scored on 23 February 2021 in the 4-1 away win against Lazio Roma at the age of 17 years and 363 days – a record that is now history.

Musiala, who is currently sidelined due to injury, had to watch from the stands as his club colleague took the record from him. However, the DFB star is likely to be delighted for the teenager – after all, Karl is a genuine Bayern home-grown talent, just like Musiala once was, and is regarded as one of the most exciting talents on campus.

Dream start for Kompany’s courage for youth

For coach Kompany, the goal was more than just a dream start to the game – it was the perfect confirmation of his philosophy of focussing on young, courageous players. The Belgian praised Karl weeks ago for his training performances and sees him as a „player with an exceptional understanding of the game and courage on the ball“.

With his historic goal, Karl should now have finally arrived in the first team. And the Bayern fans celebrated him frenetically – not only because of his goal, but also because he symbolises what Kompany is currently bringing to the club: a breath of fresh air, courage for youth and enthusiasm for the game.

A moment that made history – and perhaps marked the beginning of a great Bayern career.
