The change of coach at Bayern Munich has caused quite a stir. Instead of bringing back Hansi Flick, the club opted for Vincent Kompany, who is apparently seen as a suitable candidate for a comprehensive reorganisation.
According to Sport BILD, Karl-Heinz Rummenigge and Uli Hoeneß held talks with Hansi Flick in which he declared his willingness in principle to sign with the Munich club for one year. However, Max Eberl and Christoph Freund insisted on Vincent Kompany, according to the report, after they had a telephone conversation with Flick in mid-May and Thomas Tuchel had turned Munich down.
The two men responsible for the sporting side of things had therefore recognised early on that a radical shake-up in the FC Bayern squad was necessary. Even a Champions League victory would not have minimised the need for extensive changes, even in the opinion of coach Tuchel.
Flick’s close relationship with the players a problem?
According to Sport BILD, the decision-makers chose Kompany after careful consideration of the options and a final discussion that did not harmonise the visions of Flick and the sporting directors.
Flick’s close ties to several players and his success with the 2020 six-pointer raised concerns as to whether he would really support the desired radical reorganisation of the squad. According to the report, he is also viewed critically by some Munich managers.
Vincent Kompany will now be the new head coach in Munich. Despite his career to date without any major successes, those in charge see great potential in him, according to the report. Eberl and Freund therefore believe that he is the right choice to drive forward significant changes and break up old structures.
Flick will now become the new coach of FC Barcelona. Meanwhile at FC Bayern, Vincent Kompany faces the challenging task of renewing the squad not only in sporting terms but also structurally. According to Sport BILD, the new board will support him in this endeavour. Kompany is expected to take a dynamic and innovative approach.
